Brendan Murphy

Dr. Brendan Murphy is an interdisciplinary watershed scientist working at the nexus of hydrology, geomorphology, and ecology. He currently leads the Watersheds and Wildfires Research Collaborative (WWRC), an international and interdisciplinary team of researchers studying the myriad effects of wildfires on watershed processes and ecosystem services, with a goal of advancing capabilities for pre-fire risk assessment and mitigation of cascading wildfire-related natural hazards (e.g. floods, debris/mudflows, and landslides). With active projects across western Canada and the US, Brendan and the WWRC team are studying and developing new models to predict wildfire severity and vegetation recovery, fire-induced soil water repellency, runoff-generated debris flow processes, post-fire runoff and streamflow response, watershed- and reach-scale river dynamics following post-fire sediment pulses, potential impacts to transportation infrastructure and water supplies, and the efficacy of pre-fire fuel treatments for mitigating post-fire risks.
